Volkswagen introduces accessory options for new Golf GTI and R

  • Oettinger style components for GTI complement latest hot hatch’s sporty character
  • LED dynamic turn signals enhance light signature
  • Dynamic Wheel Center Caps available with model-specific logos

Herndon, VA — Volkswagen of America, Inc. is pleased to introduce the full line of accessories for the all-new, eighth generation Golf GTI. A perennial favorite of VW enthusiasts, the latest generation GTI benefits from a number of styling options, available now.

“The GTI is our most storied enthusiast vehicle,” said Hein Schafer, Senior Vice President of Product Marketing and Strategy at Volkswagen of America. “Its owners have a history of dialing the car in to match their personality and lifestyle, and we are proud to offer a catalog of dynamic options to help them do so.”

In continued collaboration with Oettinger Sports Systems GmbH, customized body elements offered for the new GTI include front and rear lip valances and a roof edge spoiler. All components can be painted and installed by Volkswagen dealerships or independent auto body shops.

Also available to enhance the GTI’s exterior styling and presence are LED Dynamic Turn Signals by Osram. Darkened when not in use, these turn signals move in a sequential fluid motion, from the inner mirror housing to the outside edge. No special coding is necessary, and the signals can also be installed by any Volkswagen dealership.

To personalize the GTI’s and Golf R’s exterior styling further, Dynamic Wheel Center Caps with model-specific logos will become available in early 2022. The dynamic center cap design allows the GTI or R logo to self-level and stay upright while the vehicle’s wheels and tires are in motion.

In addition to the styling elements, there is a full suite of accessories Volkswagen offers for Golf GTI and R models that bolster convenience and vehicle protection. Rubber MuddyBuddy® and carpeted Monster Mats® help protect the floors, while Bumperdillo® (available late spring 2022 guards the rear bumper against damage during the loading and unloading of cargo. Other options include a frameless, auto dimming rearview mirror compatible with HomeLink Connect®.

Volkswagen ID.4 and Taos SUVs win 2022 MotorWeek Driver’s Choice awards

  • ID.4 takes honors for Best EV
  • Taos named Best Small Utility

Herndon, VA — Volkswagen of America, Inc. is pleased to announce that two of the brand’s SUVs, the 2021 ID.4 EV and 2021 Taos, have received 2022 MotorWeek Driver’s Choice Awards. The ID.4 was named Best EV, while the Taos received the title of Best Small Utility.

“These are great individual wins for our ID.4 and Taos, as well as for Volkswagen SUV strategy,” said Hein Schafer, Senior Vice President, Product Marketing & Strategy, Volkswagen of America, Inc. “These vehicles are great examples of how we have grown and diversified our lineup to meet the market with quality, value-packed offerings.”

“The Volkswagen ID.4 checks all the boxes that make a small utility successful and then some,” said John Davis, host and creator of MotorWeek. “It’s attractive, comfortable, loaded with technology, has generous space for people and cargo, and is available in two or four-wheel drive. Add to that a highly accessible price, it is the first ‘everyman’s EV.’”

On Taos, Davis remarked “Everyone knows that Volkswagen has a legacy of building great small cars. Now the same can be said of a new chapter, their smallest utility, the Taos. The Taos delivers a mix of spaciousness, standard features, functionality, and driving prowess that is more than enough to shake up this very crowded segment.”

In selecting the annual Drivers’ Choice Awards, MotorWeek’s editorial staff evaluates more than 150 cars, trucks, and sport utility vehicles every year. Winners are chosen based on driving performance, technology, practicality, fuel efficiency, and value for the dollar.

The ID.4 is Volkswagen’s first all-electric SUV and the brand’s first global EV. Built on Volkswagen’s MEB electric vehicle architecture—the modular electric drive matrix—it marries the strengths of a purpose-built EV with performance, packaging and value, features that have marked the brand for decades. The compact SUV is equipped with an 82 kWh battery and is offered in 201-horsepower rear-wheel drive and 295-hp all-wheel-drive configurations. Modern design pairs with high-tech features, like standard IQ.DRIVE® advanced driver assistance technology and a smart infotainment system, using voice and touch. For 2022, Volkswagen expects an EPA-estimated range improvement over MY21, and will be adding Auto Hold, 135 kW DC fast charging, and Plug & Charge throughout the model year. Three years of 30-minute fast charging sessions with Electrify America is included at no additional cost.

MSRP for the ID.4 Pro with rear-wheel drive starts at $40,760, before a potential Federal tax credit of up to $7,500. The all-wheel-drive ID.4 Pro starts at $44,440. Destination charges for all ID.4 models is $1,195.

The 2022 Volkswagen Taos compact SUV debuts with a bold exterior design, practical but refined interior, advanced technology, and available 4Motion® all-wheel drive. Slotting below the Tiguan, Taos offers Volkswagen’s signature driving dynamics, high quality, and smart packaging in a smaller package with a lower price tag. Taos boasts a tech-forward package, including standard Volkswagen Digital Cockpit and Car-Net® telematics, offering in-car Wi-Fi capability when you subscribe to a data plan. Available technology includes Volkswagen’s MIB3 infotainment system, as well as IQ.DRIVE® driver assistance technology, Light Assist, and Dynamic Road Sign Display. All versions of the Taos are powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged and direct-injection EA211 TSI engine making 158 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque.

MSRP for the Taos S with front-wheel drive starts at $22,995. The Taos S 4Motion starts at $25,040. Destination charges for all ID.4 models is $1,195.

  • Golf GTI also named to Car and Driver’s 10Best list for 2022 – its 16th consecutive win

Herndon, VA — Volkswagen of America, Inc. is proud to announce that Car and Driver magazine has named the 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI, Golf R, ID.4, Jetta GLI, Taos, and Tiguan to the magazine’s Editors’ Choice list for 2022.

The Car and Driver 2022 Editors’ Choice list consists of 116 vehicles—cars, trucks, crossovers, and SUVs—out of nearly 400 models that Car and Driver editors tested, rated and ranked this year. Each year, Car and Driver conducts rigorous instrumented testing on hundreds of vehicles. Those results and the following criteria are used to choose the vehicles for the Editors’ Choice list: the rankings each vehicle earns within its market segment versus competitors, how well it fulfills its intended mission, and editors’ subjective evaluations of each vehicle’s performance. Only vehicles that are on sale in 2022, and those that the staff has hands-on driving experience with, are eligible for Editors’ Choice.

How features available in the 2022 Golf GTI and Golf R can help avoid collisions with cyclists and pedestrians

If you haven’t driven a new vehicle in the past few years, you may be amazed at how far advanced driver assistance technology has come. The gee-whiz system that could help you parallel park your car 10 years ago has now evolved to a full suite of available driver assistance features that use cameras and radar designed to work with adaptive cruise control and read road markings, with advanced software stitching all the data together.

A lot of that progress has happened one step at a time, and the 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI and Golf R exemplify that with a new upgrade to the available Front Assist feature to help avoid collisions with cyclists and pedestrians.

Front Assist is part of the Volkswagen IQ.DRIVE driver assistance technology; available across the 2022 Volkswagen lineup, the Front Assist feature works to warn drivers of potential collisions, and in some cases, provide automatic braking assistance.

Prior versions of Front Assist used radar sensors built into the front of a vehicle to detect moving objects that could lead to a collision and could distinguish between a vehicle and a pedestrian. The newest version of Front Assist, available on Mk8 Golf models, also employs the forward-facing camera to help identify and distinguish cyclists and pedestrians from other objects – not just directly in front of the car, but those traveling alongside it as well.

“By using sensor fusion that combines the data from the camera and the radar, this technology can help detect pedestrians and cyclists who the driver may not see in front or alongside the vehicle,” said Izzuddeen Hack, Electronic Strategy Lead for Volkswagen Group of America. “That can give the driver more warning and our systems more intelligence about what’s happening to help avoid a potential crash”

As the system operates with radar, it can detect people and cyclists ahead of the vehicle in darkness or dusk that the driver might have inadvertently overlooked. If the system senses a pedestrian or cyclist could be in the vehicle’s path, Front Assist can activate the Forward Collison Warning system and in some cases provide Automatic Emergency Braking.

Within physical system limits, Forward Collision Warning can alert the driver of a potential critical front-end collision situation, both acoustically and visually by a warning symbol in the instrument cluster if the car is traveling above 18 mph. It can also issue an automatic jolt of the brakes to help warn the driver of the danger. If the driver fails to brake, Automatic Emergency Braking can activate to help slow the vehicle. If the car is traveling below 18 mph and the system detects a potential front-end collision, Automatic Emergency Braking activates without a prior acoustic and visual warning. If the brake pedal is applied but the driver brakes too lightly, Braking Support automatically increases brake pressure.
